This has led both political parties to defend their own in situations where the individual in question was indefensible and also motivated ethnic communities to defend their own against 'persecution' even when the 'victim' was clearly culpable and had brought such on himself. It happens among police, teachers, and US Senators. Still pisses me off. Polanski entered a guilty plea of 'sex with a minor', which means he admitted legal wrongdoing (even if he has unsuccessfully tried to laugh off the moral question), and then skipped the country. So he is a premeditated fugitive from justice. Defending him because you like his movies is ridiculous. In the very best possible light he is an idiot with no sense of responsibility for his own thoughtless actions. I don't see it in 'the best light', either. Regardless of the nature of the crime itself (the facts of which cannot be proven at law because of the plea) there is a reason why we have age of consent laws. Children are not adults and do not have the emotional maturity to make adult choices and adults are expected to know that and make responsible decisions with that fact in mind. Polanski is a scumbag and the people standing up for him now are the same people (in great part)who whined about Elia Kazan being given a lifetime achievement award by the MPAA because he dealt with the consequences of his actions in a manner they didn't like.
