Actually, Brian, Ronald Reagan's fiscal policies were the most successful of the 20th century. He was responsible for the largest peacetime economic boom in our country's history, he lowered taxes, increased federal government revenues, increased median income levels, and created more than 34 million jobs. Everyone benefited, not just the rich. We now we have the advantage of distance and hindsight that will allow us to revisit and replicate the Reagan boom.

I was a young kid during the Reagan years so I didn't learn about his policies until much later, and if you've discounted them because he was a Republican, they're really worth a second look.

But look, either McCain or Obama is going to be president in a few short months and we will see firsthand whether their economic policies are good for the country.

Everyone: thank you for the comments. I am finding it difficult to keep up with the moderation queue (and the deletion of threats and other vitriol that detracts from civil discourse) so I am disabling comments for the time being.

Plausible? Right. About as plausible as McCain's plan to win Pennsylvania.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Police sources tell KDKA that a campaign worker has now confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter "B" in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker.

Ashley Todd, 20, of Texas, initially told police that she was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield and that the suspect became enraged and started beating her after seeing her GOP sticker on her car.

Police investigating the alleged attack, however, began to notice some inconsistencies in her story and administered a polygraph test.

Authorities, however, declined to release the results of that test.

Investigators did say that they received photos from the ATM machine and "the photographs were verified as not being the victim making the transaction."

This afternoon, a Pittsburgh police commander told KDKA Investigator Marty Griffin that Todd confessed to making up the story.

The commander added that Todd will face charges; but police have not commented on what those charges will be.

According to police, investigators working on the interview process detected several inconsistencies in Todd's story that differed from statements made in the original police report.

Pittsburgh Police Public Information Officer Diane Richard released a statement earlier today, saying: "Because of the inconsistencies in her statements, Ms. Todd was asked to submit to a polygraph examination which she agreed to do."

No photos of Todd are being released by Pittsburgh Police at this time.

The investigation is continuing as officials determine what charges will be filed.

"It doesn’t matter whether Ashley was genuinely attacked for her political beliefs..."

Are you flipping kidding me? Since when do conservatives not deal with facts, but with things as the way they imagine them to be?

Oh, wait... since the neo-cons took over. My bad.

Response from Jenn Q. Public, 10/24/08 @ 11:43 pm:
I just found Dave's unintentionally funny comment while clearing out the moderation queue - it's too much trouble to turn comments back on, so I'll just respond here. Dave, there wasn't a shred of accuracy in your comment. I'm not a conservative, this post wasn't about dismissing facts, and the neo-con takeover only exists in your anti-Semitic fantasies. Ashley Todd turned out to be a unrepentant liar and a racist to boot. That doesn't change the fact that even the liberal media believed her story because a highly visible segment of Obama's supporters have demonstrated that they're willing to go to extreme (and illegal) lengths to win the election for their candidate.

I haven't suggested that the majority of Obama's supporters are so inclined, and I hope with every ounce of my being that they're not. But it says something that Obama and his surrogates attract the sort of supporter who would beat a woman with her own campaign sign (as happened in NYC recently). It says something that the unhinged left uses sites like HuffPo and Kos to smear the Republican candidates and their children, and yet Barack Obama is willing to write for HuffPo. It says something that so many liberals are willing to engage in fraudulent donations and the Obama campaign is willing to accept them. Is this a product of Obama encouraging a permissive, anything goes environment among his acolytes? Is it a demonstration of Obama's poor judgment and the kind of example he sets? Certainly a man can't be responsible for every one of his followers, but he can sure as hell do a lot more to make his campaign a much less hospitable place for them.

"I believe reducing taxes for businesses is not corporate welfare, it’s an investment in job creation."

How is giving big oil huge tax breaks, for instance, going to create jobs? They already make tens of billions of dollars in profits each quarter. It's small businesses that create the majority of jobs and more than 90% of them will get a tax break under Obama. His tax cuts target people and companies making less than $250,000, which is the vast majority. The Bush administration has been reducing assistance to small businesses and McCain supports the continuation of those policies.

Also, studies show that the economy does SO MUCH better under democratic administrations as opposed to republican administrations. The reason is because democrats create policies that help the average worker, which energizes the economy. Republicans create policies that reduce taxes on the wealthiest, which increases the burden on the poor. Tax cuts for the wealthy doesn't create jobs as much as it merely makes them richer.

the income gap between the average worker and the average CEO has dramatically increased and the middle class has shrunk. wholesale deregulation and bush-style tax cuts are what have caused that. look at LCURVE.ORG and you'll see the frightening distribution of income in our country.

But I often wonder to myself, if Barack Obama wasn’t mixed, would he really be as “risky” as everyone is trying to paint him to be?

Before you try to raise the specter of racial motivations for finding Obama "risky," you should note that several of the commenters in this thread are from mixed race families. This probably isn't the place to make that argument.

By the way, you're the first one here to bring up the "Obama is a Muslim" meme. It's a ridiculous distraction and a falsehood, but since it's part of your astroturfing talking points, I guess you had to bring it up. The same goes for the issue of abortion. It never occurred to you that I'm pro-choice, and plenty of other Republicans are too. And for the record, I've never commented on either candidate's educational experience.

Obama is a bad choice because I disagree with his ideas, not because I take issue with his race or religion. For example, I believe reducing taxes for businesses is not corporate welfare, it's an investment in job creation. I think a muscular foreign policy is good for the U.S. and good for our allies, and helping fledgling democracies achieve their goals is good for everyone. I am also a federalist and believe that many decisions should be left up to the states. In my view, the Supreme Court justices are entrusted with interpreting the constitution, not doing what strikes them as fair based on their morals and values. Those are just a few of the issues on which Barack Obama and I disagree.

It isn't always about race, although I'm sure that's what you'll tell yourself when Obama loses the election.

Umm, hey paratha... I'm not a guy.
And I don't think that McCain's plans will change anything, at least not for the better.
Frankly, I don't make over $250k yrly. The Bush tax cuts have done a whole lot of nothing for me.

I have looked at their tax plans, the voting records, the pull-out time table that Obama had for Iraq (as opposed to us being forced out now), the unethical actions of Palin in her own state, the flip-flopping of the 2000 McCain (when he truly was "the Maverick")and the 2008 McCain where he now mimicks Bush, how in 1993 he spoke out against the unnecessary campaign spending that his VP is now doing....

I've been keeping watch on numerous publications and shows, as well as researching things for myself. I've read Barack Obama's 1995 book 'Dreams from My Father' for myself to try to better understand his overall mentality. And John McCain in no way has won my vote. He was just a seemingly nice old man in the beginning, but after he chose Palin for his VP... forget about it. I've done quite a bit of research on her in particular (given his old age and health issues), and I would personally hate to see her gain control of our country.

And what I meant by the statement you quoted, was the racial and cultural division that still exists in this country. I know that you can't change everyone, but I will be the change that I aspire to see in others.

I happen to like my handle, thank you.
What's the point in trying to prove you wrong? Not everything is that cut and dry.
This is all a matter of opinion here, and I'm simply stating mine just as the rest of you have.

But I often wonder to myself, if Barack Obama wasn't mixed, would he really be as "risky" as everyone is trying to paint him to be? Since when has an international education been a flaw? Just because he attended a school in Indonesia for a couple of years that was Muslim based, he's automatically a Muslim himself? How many people do you know who've went to parochial schools and then later in life disassociate themselves from their parentally-engrained religions?
Because he doesn't want to ban abortion, people want to pretend he's the baby-killing anti-Christ. Maybe he's just realistic enough to know that it's really not going to change anything. It would just lead to more backroom, coat-hanger abortions with really, really bad results for all involved.

Obama was president of the Harvard Law Review and McCain barely managed to squeak by in the naval academy, graduating in the bottom 5 of his class. He accumulated an impressive numbers of demerits for irrepressible and irresponsible actions, such as ditching a plane in Corpus Christi Bay and flying so low in Spain that he cut down power lines and deprived part of the country of electricity for a while. Wow, that's the kind of wreckless behavior I'd like in a president!
But here I am getting off topic...

This election has become one big circus and I think that bulls*** like this article are just fueling the fire.
Do you honestly, seriously, consider that B on her cheek to be "carved"? Does it look like someone actually used a knife? I have butter knives that would do more damage than that.

This election has become one big circus and I think that bulls*** like this article are just fueling the fire.
Do you honestly, seriously, consider that B on her cheek to be “carved”? Does it look like someone actually used a knife? I have butter knives that would do more damage than that.

The guy with the vulgar name said "I’m sick of seeing Americans seperate themselves from their own people when numerous other countries hate us and would like to see us perish for our liberties." That's exactly why we should vote for McCain. I wish I could transfer through osmosis to these people everything I have read in the past year about why Obama's plans can not succeed. His hopey changey speeches sound nice, but his "substance" is lacking. If hope and change could keep us safe, aid our neighbors, create jobs, fix social security, and accomplish tort and health care reform, I would vote for Obama. Those things are too important to risk on empty rhetoric so McCain has my vote.

Yes. Too late. the left has spent a decade teaching kids who are the backbone of you're movement that we republicans are literally evil. That we kill Muslims for fun, rob from the poor and are the true culprits of 9/11. Now they are physically attacking us and we're supposed to what? Blog about it?

ACORN is funded by the Democrats so it'll never "go out of business' and the time of elections in this country is quickly drawing to a close. I've spent 3 years being called a race traitor (by White liberals) a Jew (as if it's an insult) and threatened with death by people just like you. So yeah Brian, too late.

If Obama doesn't win you'll be out on the streets rioting too. If he does you'll be watching the celebratory riots of your Obama supporting friends. Either way what exactly do you think we should do when someone is throwing bricks through our windows? Talk it out with them?
