Tonight America discovered a new national treasure in Sarah Palin. And the thousands of liberals who had underestimated her simultaneously crapped their pants. Joe Biden crapped his pants twice.

Governor Palin’s speech to the RNC was masterfully crafted, but more importantly, artfully delivered. She demonstrated an impressive ability to seamlessly maneuver between compassionate advocate and savvy attack dog. Sarah Palin proved that she can dish it out as well as she can take it.  I wouldn’t miss the VP debate for all the guns and religion in small town America.

Joe Biden, prepare to be pwned.

Today We Are All Bristol Palin

Reactions to the news of Bristol Palin’s pregnancy have ranged from gleeful schadenfreude to deranged acrimony from left wing dregs who believe they’ve found their Jeremiah Wright.

But Bristol’s brave decision to raise her baby with the support of her partner and family has also served to inspire. Her story is our story, and men and women throughout the blogosphere are sharing their personal experiences with teen motherhood and unintended pregnancies.

Dr. Sanity related her story of abortion and regret.

A RedState blogger shared his experience with unplanned pregnancy over two generations.

Neo-neocon described a few of the many ways unintended pregnancy can impact our lives.

Ed Morrissey lamented the branding of teen pregnancy as catastrophic, and shared his family’s touching story of teen parenthood.

And really, who among us can’t relate to what Bristol Palin and her family are going through? One-third of girls in the United States get pregnant before age 20, and over 80% of those pregnancies are unplanned. Many more teens have had “pregnancy scares,” for lack of a better term. Odds are you’ve either experienced teen pregnancy or you know someone who has.

So today, as Bristol Palin finds herself under the media microscope, viciously attacked by hypocrites in glass houses, all of us should stand behind her because in one way or another, we are all Bristol Palin.

The Green-Eyed Monster Rears Her Dowdy Head

Shakespeare, you magnificent bastard, you’ve gone and done it again. With near prescience, you penned just the turn of phrase I need to describe Maureen Dowd’s acerbic mockery of Sarah Palin as a wife, a mother, and a politician:

It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock / The meat it feeds on

Granted that line was delivered by a despicable villain, Iago, but since Dowd can conveniently overlook Sarah Palin’s depth of character, I figure I can ignore the source of the quote. Here’s a taste of Dowd’s piece in which she likens Palin’s life to a “hokey chick flick”:

This chick flick, naturally, features a wild stroke of fate, when the two-year governor of an oversized igloo becomes commander in chief after the president-elect chokes on a pretzel on day one.

The movie ends with the former beauty queen shaking out her pinned-up hair, taking off her glasses, slipping on ruby red peep-toe platform heels that reveal a pink French-style pedicure, and facing down Vladimir Putin in an island in the Bering Strait. Putting away her breast pump, she points her rifle and informs him frostily that she has some expertise in Russia because it’s close to Alaska. “Back off, Commie dude,” she says. “I’m a much better shot than Cheney.”

Then she takes off in her seaplane and lands on the White House lawn, near the new ice fishing hole and hockey rink. The “First Dude,” as she calls the hunky Eskimo in the East Wing, waits on his snowmobile with the kids — Track (named after high school track meets), Bristol (after Bristol Bay where they did commercial fishing), Willow (after a community in Alaska), Piper (just a cool name) and Trig (Norse for “strength.”)

The jealousy apparent in Dowd’s screed is palpable. She clearly wishes she could Freaky Friday her way into Palin’s body to experience the world of a powerful woman with a rich life, important career, and loving family, even if just for a little while. She should be so lucky.

Bristol Palin and Her Family Can Emerge as Role Models

While the liberal smear machine is busy decrying Sarah Palin’s choice of jewelry and gleefully branding her a “patsy for the patriarchy,” her family is dealing with a very private matter. The AP is reporting that 17-year-old Bristol Palin is five months pregnant and will raise her child with the support of her family and soon-to-be husband, Levi.

A statement released by the campaign said that Bristol Palin will keep her baby and marry the child’s father. Bristol Palin is five months pregnant, and the baby is due in late December.

“Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents,” Sarah and Todd Palin said in the brief statement.

“Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family,” they added.

The Palins demonstrate, yet again, that abortion need not be the default choice for an unplanned pregnancy or the only response to an unexpected prenatal diagnosis. They are unapologetically anti-abortion, and they walk the walk. By providing Bristol with a supportive home environment, Sarah and Todd Palin ensured that their daughter could comfortably make a choice consistent with her values.

The Obamas teach their daughters that “if they make a mistake,” they “don’t want them punished with a baby.” The Palins teach their daughters that even in the face of an unmistakable challenge, they have their “unconditional love and support.”

Which family provides a better model to which American families can aspire?

Which family sends the message that it’s okay to choose childbirth over abortion, to view children as blessings and not burdens?

While I am pro-choice, I have nothing but admiration for families who make it possible for teens to choose to raise children that result from unplanned pregnancies. McCain campaign aides confirm that Bristol Palin made the choice to continue her pregnancy. Not enough girls feel such a choice is available.

Bristol Palin did not plan to subject herself to intense media scrutiny, and does not deserve the vile, inappropriate bile “progressive” blog commenters are already spewing. But now that she’s under the media microscope, Bristol is uniquely positioned to make a huge difference in the lives of young women in this country.

I hope that Bristol Palin chooses to travel with the McCain campaign, talking to other girls and families, and teaching the country that abortion statistics will only plummet when American families and communities follow the Palin example of love, support, and acceptance. Like her mother, I’m certain she’ll be able to balance public life and family, even in the face of constant criticism and appalling misogyny.
